Route 66 which, as the famous song says, crosses the United States “from Chicago to L.A.” is one of the greatest expressions of the “on the road” American dream. In this book, conceived by Anniversary Books together with one of the most important American collectors of memories of Route 66, it is possible to retrace through the years of its greatest splendor the path that was called by John Steinbeck America’s Mother Road; between the fifties and sixties, before being supplanted by modern interstate highways, this was the main artery to connect the east to the west; it ran into the center of the countries of deep America – between Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona – marking, with his passage, the architectural and economic development and helping to affirm another of the American myths, the motel, which dotted its edges with colorful neon signs and fanciful shapes.
This book is a tribute to one of the symbols of twentieth-century America and offers continuous references to the suggestions of literature, music and cinema that owe so much to the myth of Route 66.
